Contract: Fixed term (6 months), Part-time (21 hours)

Faber is a leading independent literary publisher. We are recruiting for an exceptionally talented designer to join our outstanding Children's team. We publish a diverse range of high-profile authors such as Emma Carroll, Lauren St John, Jason Reynolds, Swapna Haddow and Kacen Callender, and we have a backlist containing the works of T. S. Eliot, Seamus Heaney, Sylvia Plath and William Golding, among many others. The Faber Children's list spans picture books to YA crossover, through gift, graphic novels and non-fiction. We give teachers and educators the books they need to nurture, support and inspire children to become the great minds of the future. Faber is also a supplier of sales and distribution services to independent publishers and has a market-leading creative writing school.

Faber prides itself on its celebrated Design heritage and we are looking for someone who will play a key part in its future. This is a part-time, temporary position, based in our London office. We also accommodate hybrid working.

We are in the business of giving all children and young people - particularly those readers from LGBTQ+ and ethnically diverse communities - the courage, confidence and character to live life to the full.

Responsibilities

  • Key tasks will include designing high quality covers from concept to production for books across the list
  • Designing interior layouts
  • Checking design work is consistent and accurate and files are ready to print
  • You will ensure design work is delivered on time and to budget
  • Attend meetings and provide guidance on design matters
  • As well as dealing with any urgent requests.

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • We would like to see a portfolio of work that demonstrates your talent and expertise in children's publishing
  • The ability to communicate ideas effectively is essential, and you should be well versed in printing processes and typography, with a keen eye for detail whilst having a meticulous approach to work
  • The successful candidate will need excellent IT and design skills with an advanced knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Experience commissioning illustrators is required, along with a clear idea of the important role book covers play in marketing books within the UK trade.
