Senior Engineer – Cooling Water Island - Civil & Structural We anticipate offering a salary between £48,000 > £62,000 (DOE) Teams based in Bristol / Main Offices - Warrington, OR Derby We are Rolls-Royce SMR and we’re doing something that’s never been done before. We are now recruiting for the exciting role of Senior Engineer – Cooling Water Island , to be involved in an industry leading, cutting-edge project for a new type of power station. Job Purpose: Reporting to the Civil & Structural Cooling Water Island Lead, the Cooling Water Island Advanced Civil & Structural Engineer will contribute to the development of the fully integrated technical solutions and governance of all large earth retaining structures, tunnelling, water retaining structures, shoreline structures and offshore structures within the Rolls Royce SMR Cooling Water Island. The role covers the technical leadership of the design of retaining, deep shaft and tunnel and offshore structures. This includes the management of engineers within the team, demonstrating the validity of the technical solutions developed under their direction, the delivery of a robust design and safety justification. The candidate will also need to assist with the integration of the civil and structural design solution into the overall plant design and lead the resolution of engineering problems within their scope. This role would suit an experienced Senior Engineer or a new Principal Engineer. This role offers the candidate the first opportunity to work on the design development and Generic Design Assessment of a new nuclear plant design for decades Key Results & What Can Be Achieved in The Role: Generic Design Assessment Submissions were submitted on time to the agreed-upon quality standards. ONR queries responded to on time. Technical Packages within the roles scope delivered to agreed programme. Successful resolution of technical issues within the roles scope within the agreed programme. Technical Governance activities completed to agreed programme. Demonstrable integration of conventional health and safety improvements to the design of the roles scope. Fosters a supportive working environment and assists with development of those within their team The Key Selection Criteria: Technical Leadership of Civil & Structural Engineering Teams The candidate should be able to provide demonstrable experience of leading civil and structural engineering teams on infrastructure projects, ideally within the nuclear or other highly regulated industries. This experience should include resolution of complex technical issues, developing justification of designs, development and management of requirements, control of risk and delivering to programme. Role specific knowledge and understanding – analysis, codes and standards, loading conditions. The candidate should be able to provide demonstrable experience of carrying out and overseeing structural analysis activities and be able to discuss the codes and standards used, as well as the challenges faced and the resolution of those challenges. The cooling water island features large earth retaining structures, tunnelling, water retaining structures, shoreline structures and offshore structures. Therefore, the candidate should have experience of the analysis, design and justification of some or all of these types of structures. Nuclear and conventional safety knowledge and experience. The role will require interaction with the safety case team and will require the development of civil and structural design substantiation against the requirements of the safety case, for part of the roles’ scope. Therefore, it is desirable (but not mandatory) that the candidate has experience of working with nuclear safety cases and the role of engineering in their production. A systems engineering approach to design development is being used, it would be beneficial if the candidate has experience of this methodology and an awareness or experience of using DOORS. Stakeholder management and Technical Governance The role will require the management of interfaces with other disciplines across the project and contribution to Interdisciplinary Teams. Therefore, the candidate should have experience of stakeholder management on large projects or within complex organisations and have excellent communication skills. Team Leadership and Behaviours The candidate will be responsible for supporting the Civil and Structural Cooling Water Island Lead with the growth and development of a high performing team. Therefore, the candidate will need to demonstrate experience of leading teams and articulate the values that they try to install into their team working environment. Qualifications & Training: The candidate should be a Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer or have sufficient work experience to demonstrate equivalence. They should also be able to articulate reasons for not pursuing Chartership if necessary. Pay and Benefits We anticipate paying a salary of between £48,000 > £62,000 (DOE) plus:- Bonus - Performance related bonus of up to 12.5% Benefits Allowance – £2200, enabling you to create a bespoke package Pension - 12% employer and 6% employee contributions.
