About the role: The main function of the Engineering department is to produce mechanical and electrical design packages to enable successful installation, commissioning, operation and service of generation only and Combined Heat & Power Plants. Providing input and support throughout the full life cycle of the project from concept to service. The role involves ensuring compliance with safety standards, developing safety protocols, and leading safety-related initiatives in line with Clarke Energy’s commitment to operational excellence. Conduct detailed hazard and operability studies (HAZOP), failure mode and effect analyses (FMEA), and other risk assessments to identify potential safety hazards in engineering designs and processes. Develop and maintain robust process safety management systems to ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations. Lead investigations of process safety incidents, identifying root causes and recommending corrective and preventive actions. Perform regular process safety audits and inspections to ensure adherence to safety protocols and regulations. Ensure all process safety activities comply with relevant local and international safety standards (e.g. COMAH, ISO standards). Collaborate with design and engineering teams to incorporate safety measures into project designs, ensuring all systems and components meet safety requirements. Develop and deliver training programs for employees and contractors on process safety management and operational safety. Assist in the development of emergency response plans and drills to ensure readiness for potential safety incidents. Prepare and present reports on safety performance metrics, safety incidents, and risk assessments to senior management. Continuously review and improve process safety systems and strategies to mitigate risks and enhance safety culture across all projects. Essential: Previous experience in process safety engineering, preferably within the energy, power generation, oil & gas, or industrial sectors. Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related discipline. Strong knowledge of process safety principles, safety regulations, and engineering standards (e.g., HAZOP, LOPA, SIL, ATEX). Proven ability to analyse complex technical issues and develop effective solutions for mitigating safety risks. In-depth knowledge of local and international safety regulations, including OSHA, COMAH, and other relevant standards. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey safety concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders. High level of analytical thinking to identify potential hazards and assess risks effectively. Familiarity with safety software tools and proficiency in Microsoft Office suite. Familiarity with process safety in power generation, gas processing, electrolysers, hydrogen, hydrogen compression, hydrogen storage. Desirable: Professional certification in process safety (e.g., IChemE Process Safety, NEBOSH, or similar). Experience leading or mentoring junior engineers or safety teams. This a full time permanent position, based in our head office in Liverpool with the option of home working. There will be an element of travel for the role as we cover the UK & Ireland. The working hours are Monday to Friday 37.5 hours.
