Senior Engineer

Role Summary The Senior Engineer will oversee the design and delivery of engineering projects from inception through to construction and completion. This role includes collaboration with all stakeholders and, where necessary, leading a designated team responsible for engineering design, construction, and maintenance projects. The Manager will assume Principal Designer responsibilities (under CDM regulations) for team projects and focus on identifying and developing innovative, efficient design solutions within time and budget constraints. The Engineering Design Team primarily supports urban transport initiatives, with project areas potentially including Highways, Civil, Structural, Drainage, Contract Administration, and Surveying. The post holder should be prepared to work across various fields as specified by project requirements. Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities Project Management * Oversee and deliver complex construction projects as defined by the project brief, often in constrained urban environments, by: * Conducting initial, interim, and final surveys and investigations. * Completing designs, calculations, specifications, plans, drawings, estimates, reports, and bills of quantities, utilizing CAD and other specialized software. * Performing site visits to verify contractor adherence to specifications and timelines, ensuring safe site operations, and reporting any safety concerns. * Preparing, issuing, updating, and closing statutory and other notices in accordance with legal requirements. * Coordinating with statutory bodies and other departments to manage conflicts and ensure smooth project delivery. * Managing project finances and contracts, with a focus on on-time and on-budget delivery. Team Supervision * Oversee resources and direct team members involved in project execution. * Interpret and communicate technical information effectively to clients, agencies, the public, and other stakeholders. * Implement cost-effective engineering solutions by interpreting and applying current technical standards and specifications. Additional Responsibilities * Lead design teams and manage the delivery of complex, high-value construction projects, or provide specialized technical designs and guidance to support multiple project programs. * Commit to ongoing professional development, including mentoring and supporting colleagues’ progress toward professional accreditation. * Contribute to service, policy, and practice development in collaboration with senior team members. General Requirements * Ability and willingness to work outdoors, occasionally outside of standard hours (e.g., evenings), and travel to sites beyond the immediate area, which may not be accessible by public transport. * Ensure safe working practices for all employees and maintain a secure working environment for employees and service users, as outlined in corporate health, safety, and welfare policies. * Adhere to the City Council’s codes of conduct, regulations, and policies. * Promote equalities and value diversity across services. * Maintain a high standard of work quality that complies with current legislation and standards
