Position Overview

As Engineering Director you will take ownership of all aspects of the business relating to the timely, cost effective and high-quality delivery of customer programmes. Working closely with the Managing Director, you'll possess strong management and leadership capability, fundamental technical expertise, and a proven track record of leading teams and delivering complex projects.

Responsibilities:

1. Working closely with the Managing Director to help define and implement strategy aligned with the future aspirations of the business with a specific focus on profitability, innovation and quality.

2. Manage the day-to-day operations of the engineering and delivery teams to ensure an efficient, cost effective and high-quality output.

3. Drive positive collaboration with clients to ensure the team has clarity on project requirements, project scopes, and deliverables.

4. Deliver engineering projects and drive ownership and accountability within the team to ensure design, development and implementation meet technical requirements and customer expectations.

5. Control budgets for engineering projects, ensuring cost control without compromising quality or timing.

6. Develop and mentor team members promoting professional growth and building strong cross departmental relationships.

7. Promote a positive culture of results-oriented success, continuous improvement, open communication and trust.

8. Identify operational and engineering risks and implement strategies to mitigate them.

9. Define and implement reporting structures and key performance metrics to concisely communicate operational performance and adherence to strategic goals.

10. Support the Managing Director with commercial and strategic elements of the business, including sales, to achieve business growth aspirations.

Requirements:

1. Desire and enthusiasm to work directly with the owner-founder of a small company to help it grow to its full potential.

2. Possess a combination of technical expertise, inspirational leadership qualities and commercial acumen.

3. Strong fundamental understanding of mechanical engineering principles with proven hands-on experience.

4. Capable of making high-level technical/design decisions, coaching the team on engineering matters, and having open technical conversations with customers in high pressure situations.

5. Ability to inspire and motivate the team, and comfortable to be authoritative when required.

6. Affinity with, and experience of, commercial aspects of business management.

7. Experience of leading technical teams, with a focus on mechanical systems.

8. Demonstrable capability to successfully grow a team, including strategy, planning and execution.

9. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with clients, stakeholders, and team members.

10. Automotive experience is strongly preferred. Exceptional candidates from other industries considered.
